2001: A Space Odyssey

January 22, 2017
Theater on the Square

An epic science fiction film produced and directed by Stanley Kubrick. The screenplay was partially inspired by Arthur C. Clarke’s short story “The Sentinel”. The film follows a voyage to Jupiter with the intelligent computer H.A.L. 9000 after a discovery of mysterious black monolith affecting human evolution. Film themes include: existentialism, human evolution, technology, artificial intelligence, and extraterrestrial life. It is noted for its scientifically accurate depictions of space flight, pioneering special effects, and ambiguous imagery. It uses sound and minimal dialogue in place of traditional narrative techniques; the soundtrack consists of classical music such as The Blue Danube.
