Dance Theatre of Harlem

Dance Theatre of Harlem was founded in 1969 by the legendary Arthur Mitchell and his former teacher, the late Karel Shook, with the primary goal of providing access to the art form of classical ballet to people of all ethnic and socio-economic backgrounds. Dance Theatre of Harlem quickly grew into a globally-acclaimed dance institution that has occupied a distinguished place in New York City’s cultural landscape and at the forefront of American artistic achievement for 49 years.
