In A Sea Symphony, his only full choral symphony, Ralph Vaughan Williams gives voice to the drama and spirituality of the ocean, bringing musical life to sea poems from Walt Whitman’s Leaves of Grass. The English composer worked on this monumental piece for seven years in his quest to match the power of Whitman’s words. New Zealand Symphony Orchestra Principal Conductor Gemma New returns after leading us in our lauded 2023/2024 season performance of Vaughan Williams’ Antarctic SymphonyA Sea Symphony is paired with American composer Gabriella Smith’s Lost Coast, a piece for cello and orchestra that expresses wonder and grief for Earth’s last wild places.
