Necati Çelik

May 31, 2020
Bing Concert Hall

Updated April 1, 2020: This event is canceled due to the spread of COVID-19.

Necati Çelik [pronounced ne-ja-tee che-lik] is one of the most important representatives of the Ottoman Turkish musical tradition and an undisputed master of the classic Turkish oud. A virtuoso player unequaled in refined and complex playing, he demonstrates that his musical roots are deep within the Ottoman tradition and that he is the principal exponent of the Turkish maqam on the oud. He is one of the rare performers who, without subscribing to a school, can simultaneously apply both the entirety of the classical-fantasist and breakthrough style and agitation with great mastery.

Regarded unanimously as an exceptional oud teacher, he shared his knowledge with hundreds of students all over the world, lecturing and leading oud seminars in Turkey, Greece, Syria, Malaysia, Germany, Austria, Belgium and the USA. Stanford professor Denise Gill, a former student of Necati Çelik, joins him on stage for this intimate performance at Bing Concert Hall.
