One of the most popular symphonies of all time, Dvořák’s Symphony No. 9 continues to enchant. In his musical postcard “From the New World,” Dvořák explores his understanding of African-American spirituals and transcriptions of Indigenous melodies—intermingled with the sounds of his native Bohemia and his own personal musical voice. The result: a cascade of majestic fanfares, longing melodies and lush harmonies that have captivated audiences for generations. This piece of American musical history sits perfectly alongside anew work by one of our nation’s greatest living composers: John Adams’ I Still Dance.
