Rash, immature, arrogant, and yet a monarch ordained by God. Richard is King, but not the leader England needs during a time of division and upheaval. Vanity and ill-advised actions send a rift through the country’s great houses and plunge the realm into dynastic civil war. But there are those who see opportunity in weakness and chaos. The ambitious Henry Bolingbroke challenges the King’s divine right to rule, raising questions about the crown, order, and the role of government. Yet the loss of his throne opens Richard up to unforeseen epiphanies far more valuable than any kingdom.

After a stellar 2018 production of Richard III that concluded the Wars of the Roses story, upstart crow collective returns to the roots of where the warfare, intrigue, and political machinations started. Rosa Joshi will direct a diverse female and non-binary cast to re-imagine this epic drama of family and political conflict featuring Brenda Joyner in the title role of Richard.
